What an amazing town! Williamsburg has so much history
and tradition, it was hard to discover it all, but I
managed to see some sights. My dad and I decided to
stay in private housing this week and what a wonderful
decision we made. The Cooke family has become an
extended part of my family. Bruce, Anne and their
eleven-year-old daughter Tori made my stay in historic
Williamsburg that much more special. The first night
we enjoyed a cookout while getting to know each other. The
night was topped off when Tori and I went to take
the dogs (two gorgeous golden retrievers) out for
a late walk. I forgot that when you are eleven
a walk really means "run the dogs", it
was definitely a great workout. The night ended
with my journey into the Titanic, the theme of
my bedroom. It was full of memorabilia, complete
with autographed pictures and replica dresses.
On Tuesday, I had my first practice
round at Kingsmill. The last fifteen or so years
the PGA tour has been playing a tournament at
this course, but this year Michelob Light decided
to switch to the LPGA and we loved it. This golf
course is now included in my top-five favorite
courses to play. With its high rough, narrow
fairways, rolling greens, and tucked hole locations,
it was set up like a major. And to my pleasure,
it was great to get off to a quick start with
a 69, what a confidence booster for my game.
The staff, volunteers, and fans were tremendous.
It was nice to get comments, constantly throughout
the week, that everyone was thrilled to have
us women playing. It was great to see the men
compare their games against ours.
I had a great time visiting Colonial
Williamsburg with Bruce, I only wished I had
been able to see Tori in her Colonial garb working
at the stables. (Within Colonial Williamsburg
is a working 1800's city, complete with the appropriate
garments, as Tori wore.) It was great to get
a personal tour from Bruce, especially the William
and Mary bookstore. William and Mary College
is so gorgeous, it reminded me of UGA. (Also,
thanks go out to Bruce and Ann for the memorable
historic book - - it will be great to look back
and see where I visited.)
On Friday, Michelob invited all
players and caddies to a German Gast Haus in
Busch Gardens for a night of fun, food and lots
of dancing. And don't forget the rides, everyone
enjoyed being young for the night. Oh, how we
can play off the course as well!
We all enjoyed getting up close
and personal to the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales,
especially Tori and I.
It was so great to spend valuable
time with such a great family. I especially enjoyed
Anne's enthusiasm on the course. The trip to
Williamsburg was one of the best this year and
I can't wait to visit again next year!
