Wow, what an unbelievable week! From golf to family and
friends, I had a week I will not forget for a long time.
Once my plane touched down on Easter Sunday morning (from Las
Vegas) I was so excited to see my home state. Nothing
is better than to go to your own stomping grounds
and eat some good home cooking. My first stop was
to see my nieces and to give LeAnn and Angelina
big hugs and kisses. It's amazing just how delightful
little ones can be. I was happy to be with my family
on Easter. Amanda and Bob (my sister and brother-in-law)
gave me my own Easter basket full of not so healthy
goodies, but we all have to splurge once in a while.
Even dad made it home late Sunday night after driving
my car back from Vegas, what a trooper he is!
On Monday, Bob was my substitute
caddie while Greg (Tex) spent an extra day with
his family in Mississippi. His little boy was
going to come to Atlanta with him, but got chicken-pox
and had to stay home, maybe another tourney.
Bob did a great job, even throwing me golf balls
to hit my driver. Next stop for him is caddie
101, watch out Tex, j/k.
Tuesday was a rather long day
as I went out and played 9 holes at Eagles Landing
and then took part in a Pro-Am at East Lake.
What a wonderful experience that was. I played
with some very funny and talented players, while
at the same time enjoying a rather beautiful
Donald Ross course. East Lake was Bobby Jones'
home course. The amount of history present was
just remarkable.
This entire week I was able to
really work on little mishaps in my swing and
putting, thanks to my coach John Godwin giving
me sound advice the whole week. We worked on
getting my pace back. He could tell that I had
played a lot in the wind because my swing got
very short and quick. We worked really hard to
get my full turn back and have a smooth transition
(pace). My putting was just the opposite, as
I tend to get a rather long stroke when putting
on fast greens. My consistency in my speed has
faltered a bit, but came back quickly. Thanks
to John, my confidence has started to shoot up
quickly without interferences.
Throughout the week I really
enjoyed seeing my nieces. On Wednesday, my dad
brought LeAnn out to the course to watch me practice.
She is learning about golf quickly. Every time
she sees golf on TV she watches attentively.
She even shagged my balls out of the hole while
I was practicing my short putts. She is a professional
in the making!
Mr. Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-Fil-A, was
such a gracious host. He threw a players family dinner
on Friday night and it was excellent, even down to the
Peach Cobbler. The Moo Town Band kept everyone entertained
while the kids were able to run around and play. The
Chick-Fil-A organization puts so much pride in "family",
it was great to be part of their amazing tournament.
On Saturday night, they had fireworks
that were beautiful, even if Ashley (my college
roommate) jumped at the loud booms. We stayed
to watch the show, but LeAnn didn't care for
the loud noise. Maybe Next time!
What a hometown following I had this week. Thank
you so much for coming!! On Friday, I had Mike McCollum
(his wife Susan was here all week…running the media
room scoreboard…a major task in any tournament, thanks),
Charlie K. and his birthday boy Harrison showed up. What
a surprise to have my friends from Maple Ridge
Golf Club, my home course in Columbus, support
me throughout the whole weekend. They showed
up in groups and made a rather loud yell on the
first tee, led by Horace of course. The Ladies
from Maple Ridge have been with me since I began
playing in junior tournaments and their support
is unwavering. They were very loud on my "near" hole-in-one
on the 16th hole. When my ball stopped an inch
short, I am sure you could hear them yell back
in Columbus. Even Lorena Ochoa came up to me
after the shot and exclaimed, "I assume
you hit a good shot!"
Thanks to my friends, Johan and
Ashley for coming out, even if my tee time was
during dinner, 4:45pm (haha Ash). Johan's parents
made the trip. John Bowen also made the trek
in between his trip from Ft. Stewart, GA to Hawaii.
Nothing seems to stop him! Thank you all!!
And about my golf well, let's
just say I was satisfied shooting my professional
lowest round 67, but look forward to going lower
in the future. Back to the practice range! Oh,
and to Tom C., a special thanks!
