It has been so nice to return to a city where
I have been many times. The McDonalds Championship
held at Dupont Country Club was spectacular
regardless of the weather. As a junior I played
the Betsy Rawls Junior Championship at Dupont
with many LPGA players that are out here on
tour. It was amazing to walk down the corridor
to the clubhouse at my first major as a pro;
it's a week I will never forget.
As the year has progressed out here on tour,
we have had to deal with some unexpected
weather, from lots of rain and wind to
cold temperatures. The McDonalds was no exception.
The week started off great as I played
a practice round with the Megster, (Meg
Mallon) and Beth Daniel. It has been truly amazing
to get to know such wonderful people
and wow how talented they are with their
sticks. I definitely picked their brains throughout
the practice round. They helped me by
pointing out where the hole locations will
be, this way I practiced shots that I may need
to have throughout the week. At one point
I turned to Meg and asked "How do you
hit such soft chips out of this high rough?" She
told me to take long smooth swings and let
the club do the work, and then she stopped
and said, "You really need to go ask
Beth, she is amazing at these shots." I
owe a lot of my up and downs to Beth
and Meg, not to mention a lot of par
saving putts, due to their knowledge of the
greens. Thanks Beth and Meg, I owe you! That was the
most fun I have had during a practice
round. They showed me that you can get your
work done, while also laughing and joking. Everyday
I learn something new.
The weather came upon us on Wednesday,
as our Pro-Am got cancelled due to an immense
amount of rain. Most golfers could be
found at the movie theater throughout the
day. I went and watched "Bend it Like Beckham" after
a rave review by the Megster. I couldn't
agree with her more, what a cute, positive
movie.
On Thursday, it was time to tee it
up. The first hole I was rather nervous, but hit it down the middle and I started
off. I felt really good with my golf game, thanks to my Coach, John Godwin,
making a trip to help make my confidence soar. Well, once again it worked and
I felt great over every shot. There was not a moment where I did not completely
trust my swing, which as a golfer is a very difficult thing to overcome. I
played solid Thursday and Friday, but my most grinding day came on Saturday
as Leslie Spalding and I were the first to tee off, hoping to get in our round
and rain was coming. We both played very well and got to the 12th tee before
being called in due to the incoming storm. After a much anticipated wait, we
were able to complete our rounds under beautiful skies.
I had a great time in Wilmington, DE, and
the results from my first major still have
me smiling!! |
